AI agents in plain language

An AI agent is a system that can pursue a goal through more than one step. Instead of producing one answer and stopping, an agent can choose an action, use an available tool, inspect the result and decide what to do next. The language model is usually the reasoning layer, while the surrounding application provides permissions, memory, tools, data access and stopping rules. A chatbot may explain how to prepare a report; an agentic workflow may gather approved source files, extract the relevant numbers, draft the report and ask for confirmation before sending it. The useful idea is the controlled loop of plan, act, observe and decide.

The building blocks of an agent

Practical agents are usually built from a small set of components. The model interprets the goal. Tools let the system search, call APIs, read documents, run code or interact with another service. Memory stores task state or selected preferences. Guardrails restrict actions, and an orchestrator decides when the task should stop. Production systems also need logs showing which tools were called, what data was used, how long each step took and whether a human approved sensitive actions. Without those controls, an agent can look impressive in a demo but be difficult to trust in real work.

Agent, assistant or automation?

Use a normal assistant when the user remains in control and mainly needs answers, drafting or analysis. Use deterministic automation when the steps are known in advance, such as moving a file after a form is submitted. Consider an agent when the path depends on intermediate results and the system must choose among several possible actions. A strong architecture is often hybrid: deterministic software handles permissions, validation and irreversible actions, while the model handles interpretation, ranking and flexible reasoning.

A safe first agent project

Start with a narrow task that has clear success criteria. Give the agent read-only tools first, limit the number of steps, set time or cost budgets and require confirmation before external side effects such as sending messages or changing records. Capture every tool call so failures can be reproduced. A good first project is a research assistant that searches an approved document collection, produces a cited summary and flags unanswered questions. It can be useful without being given unrestricted access to business systems.

How to judge whether an agent is working

Do not evaluate only the final answer. Track task completion rate, tool-call accuracy, unnecessary steps, latency, cost, recovery from failures and the number of human interventions. Test ambiguous requests and missing permissions. A reliable agent should know when it lacks enough information and stop rather than invent progress. Agent quality is therefore a system property, not just a model benchmark. Strong model capability helps, but tool design, policies and evaluation data are equally important.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is every AI assistant an agent?

No. An assistant can answer requests without independently choosing and executing multiple actions. Agentic behavior begins when the system can pursue a goal through a controlled sequence of decisions and tool use.

Do AI agents need APIs?

Not always, but tools and APIs are common because they let the agent interact with external systems. An agent can also work only with local files or internal functions.

Should an agent act without approval?

Only for low-risk, reversible actions with clear limits. Sensitive or irreversible actions should normally require deterministic checks and human confirmation.
